You're Dead to Me: A Mixed Bag of Mystery and High School Drama ⭐⭐⭐
Amy Christine Parker’s You’re Dead to Me has an intriguing premise—a high school thriller blending dark humor, drama, and a touch of macabre. While the story has its moments, it doesn’t fully live up to its potential, leaving me with mixed feelings.
🚨 Spoilers Ahead! 🚨
The story follows Ruby, a high school senior who secretly exposes the elite “Bling Brigade” at her private school through her anonymous TikTok account, @ReputationKiller. The setup is exciting, and Ruby’s quest for justice against the spoiled, untouchable kids is satisfying—at first. Things take a darker turn when she encounters a ghostly vision of herself dead, setting the stage for a supernatural twist.
The character dynamics are fun, especially Ruby’s friendship with Anton and Xavier. Their banter and loyalty provide much-needed levity. However, the Bling Brigade sometimes feels one-dimensional, and their antics can be repetitive. The supernatural elements, while chilling, are introduced so abruptly that they feel disconnected from the main plot.
The prom-posal with Xavier and Anton is both heartwarming and hilarious, even if it’s a little over the top. The reveal of the dress, identical to the one Ruby’s ghost was wearing, adds an eerie layer to the moment.
“You’re the best kind of trouble.”
The pacing is uneven, with some parts dragging while others rush by too quickly. Ruby’s investigation into the Bling Brigade is compelling but occasionally overshadowed by high school drama tropes. The ending leaves some questions unanswered, which might be intentional, but feels unsatisfying.
Overall, You’re Dead to Me is a decent read for fans of high school mysteries and light horror. While it didn’t fully stick the landing, it offers enough suspense and drama to keep you turning the pages.
